I recently attended my first event for DESMA 9; an event called Cosmological Events Panel (part 1). Going into this event, I didn't really know what to expect, but became very interested early on I the presentation. The event was panel style, and involved several artists from the group whose art was featured in the exhibition. This particular exhibition was very unique for several different reasons, including the date in which it was set to premier. Stardust [Alien] Star Dust: signal to noise, was featured at the Meteorite Gallery in the Natural History Museum in Vienna, starting March 10, 2020. This was the day that Europe shut down officially due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. Artists, including Professor Victoria Vesna, were unsure it if their projects within the exhibition would ever be seen due to the pandemic, however through panels and the creation of their website, the works were still seen by a large audience.

After watching the artists on the zoom panel interact and speak on their works, Professor Vesna's piece stuck with me the most. I went to the the website to hear more about Alien Stardust, Victoria Vesna's addition to the exhibition. This piece was originally designed to attempt to help the audience understand their interconnectedness with space and how elementally, we are all stardust too. While this message was definitely conveyed through her art, it was also given an even deeper meaning due to its premier during the pandemic.
Victoria Vesna's Alien Stardust
The original meaning of the piece was to communicate the unmatched beauty of being living humans on earth, and how incredible our connection to space is through our elemental makeup matching that of the cosmos. Vesna wanted to communicate this through her work, also attempting to highlight the importance of understanding this remarkable connection and how things like pollution and environmental destruction block us from our connection to space. After reading more about Vesna's work, I was truly touched by her positivity in looking at her piece and the pandemic and making a correlation between the two. She claimed that the point of her was was to attempt to highlight humans connection to each other and space, as we are all just star dust floating in the universe. She then took this meaning, and made it fit to the issues of the pandemic, saying how something like the virus can't be seen, and just floats about between us, connecting us all as humans, and forcing us to grow stronger together. I loved this analogy as it seemed so positive, in a time where negativity came so easily, especially for her and the other artists who's exhibition was delayed in opening.
Proof of Event Attendance 1
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this event, and seeing/hearing the ideas and interaction between artists from all over the world. The passion and creativity of the artists truly shines through their works, and they way the speak about them. I will be attending parts two and three of this series, and I cannot wait other other amazing artist's pieces, and hear about the creativity behind the initial idea.
