Event 3: Cosmological Elements

 I recently attended the final part of the Cosmological Elements Events series. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the art pieces that were shown in this presentation. I also thought that the entire series and project as a whole was so interesting, as so may artists from all over the word came together to talk about cosmological ideas they found interesting, and how they could collaborate to create art through this shared interest. With that being said let's dive in to the project I found most interesting within the 3rd part of the Cosmological Elements Series; The Kepler Station.     The Kepler Station was a simulation that intended to depict without like on mars would be like for astronauts living on a station there. The simulation was set up so that none of the people in the experiment could leave the "station" and it imitated what life on Mars and other neighboring planets might look like in the future for humans. Space and Art

 This final week of DESMA 9 covered the basis behind the relationship between art and space. This chapter is one I was really looking forward to as I feel like I have a bit of prior knowledge going into the discussion about space. We first looked at one of the first scholars to study space, Copernicus. Copernicus was the first to ever suggest that the sun was at the center of the solar system in terms of mathematical logistics. He observed and studied astronomy and the sky, and began to understand specifically Earth's tilt and rotation, allowing him an explanation for "the heavens" (Vesna pt.1 1:20), however didn't want to cause issues with the church, so delayed publishing it.     We began to see more current outer space research come about after WWII, through the creation of the first atomic bomb. NanoTech + Art

 Nanotechnology is a scientific study at an extremely small scale (nanometers), that seeks to manipulate and work with nano sized structures. This study started with Richard Feynman who worked with both the Atom Bomb, even getting a Nobel prize for his work with Quantum Physics. He suggested that at an extremely small scale, almost atomic, actually move and change atoms as a new form of scientific technology. This was only discovered in the 1950s/60s, so we are very new to the field and discoveries are being made still each day.         You may be wondering however, how does this type of science relate to art? Well it starts with nanoparticles, where are anywhere from 1-100 nanometers large. They might be thought of as a "new" technology, however they have been used in art and science for hundreds of years.
